The Highway Worker team, officially the Department of Transportation (DOT), is a team/job in the Ultimate Driving games.

Highway workers in Ultimate Driving are tasked with controlling traffic signals, operating variable message signs and drawbridges, towing vehicles, maintaining and closing roads, and repairing destroyed fire hydrants.

An overhaul for the team was recently announced for February, 2nd, 2024 on January, 27th, 2024 with the leaks being shown on February, 1st (which then revealed the date of the update). The update has happened at 5PM EST on that day and includes a prop toll for custom signage, cones, and barrells, manually controlled traffic light signals, a cherry picker/bucket truck for DOT, DOT equipment/crash attenuator truck, a new base DOT arrowboard pick up truck, and a reskinned and fixed DOT salter truck. Other updates include revised & cleaned up parking brake behaviors, DOT prop collisions being tied with collisions via settings as well as fixed house fires, memory leaks, and other minor bugs. The bugs from the February, 2nd update were fixed on February, 5th, 2024.

Highway workers in Ultimate Driving are tasked with controlling traffic signals, operating variable-message signs and drawbridges, towing vehicles, maintaining and closing roads, and repairing destroyed fire hydrants. They drive primarily trucks and utility vehicles that carry proper equipment and lighting for road work. They operate from DOT depots.

The player needs to have less than 100 Bounty to join the Highway Worker team. Highway workers are not immune to traffic fines unless they use their vehicle's flashing lights, which will negate all fines.

The Highway Worker team requires the Highway Worker Gamepass, which costs R$99, as of February 6, 2024.

Tools[]

Cone[]

The cone places traffic cones on the road to notify motorists of a closed area or road, similar to flares. Unlike flares, cones are physical objects that are affected by gravity and external forces, such as being knocked over by vehicles. They are capable of blocking or impeding cars, though excessive and deliberate use of this is against the game's rules.

Barrel[]

The barrel is very similar to the cone, and is simply a larger model of them. Like cones, barrels are physical objects that are affected by gravity and external forces, such as being knocked over by vehicles. They are noticeably heavier and are much better at stopping vehicles than cones, which are lighter.

Flagger[]

The flagger is a two-sided sign used to control traffic speed near work sites. The flagger has two sides: a stop sign and a slow sign. The sign display may be switched by clicking. The flagger is always parallel with the direction the player is facing, meaning the player cannot face traffic to effectively use the flagger.

Tow Hook[]

The tow hook brings vehicles to the bed of a tow truck and is used to tow vehicles. The tow hook can only be used on parked vehicles, and requires the truck's bed to be lowered. The tow hook can be accessed from the yellow squares on a Tow Truck. Unequipping the tow hook will automatically remove it from the player's inventory.

Laptop[]

The laptop can be used for viewing traffic cameras, just like police and EMTs. The cameras are useful for locating any damaged road infrastructure or towable cars, or just for remotely monitoring traffic in specific locations.

Highway Worker Rules[]

Ultimate Driving has a series of guidelines that are meant to improve highway worker gameplay and make the experience enjoyable for all.

  • In Ultimate Driving, roleplay is an option. It has not been the focus of the UD series for almost a decade. If a player does not want to roleplay, highway workers cannot force them to. Dedicated community-run Ultimate Driving roleplay groups and servers exist for these purposes.
  • Highway workers are not allowed to attempt to block or impede cars with cones. While closing sections of roads is fine, immobilizing cars by surrounding them with cones and vehicles is not. This is a bannable offense.
  • Highway workers are not allowed to block entire roads, lots, or spawns, especially for no reason. This is a bannable offense.
  • Highway workers are not allowed to write messages that violate Roblox Terms of Service on the variable-message signs. This is a bannable offense.
  • Highway workers are not allowed to tow people's vehicles without their permission. While abandoned cars may be towed, highway workers should ensure the vehicle is actually abandoned and has not just been parked by their owner. If a vehicle appears to be in use, or the vehicle's owner requests that the vehicle be left alone, it should not be towed. This is a bannable offense.

Trivia[]

  • The Highway Worker/DOT is the only job that requires a gamepass at the current moment.
  • Some games, such as UD: Currituck, have custom liveries based on where the map is located.
  • Vehicles being towed can despawn if the player owning it leaves the game, but this can be stopped if another player gets into the driver seat then jumps out.
  • DOT workers had access to the city bus for free on UD II and III Classic. Buses are now used by the Transit Team.
  • The tow truck uses standard car horns, despite having visible airhorns on its roof.
  • Many people despise the gamepass, calling it mostly a "waste of time". It depends.
  • On May 2022, Odessa got revamped and the traffic boxes are removed.
