The Police team (officially the Ultimate Driving Police Department) is a team in the Ultimate Driving games.

Police officers in Ultimate Driving are tasked with enforcing traffic laws, responding to crimes, and arresting or ticketing players with Bounty. They are arguably one of the most important teams in the series.

Overview[]

Police in Ultimate Driving are tasked with enforcing traffic laws, responding to crimes, and arresting or ticketing players with Bounty. They mostly drive modified civilian vehicles with appropriate markings and equipment. They have, among other tools, a pistol, handcuffs, a radar gun, and a traffic camera computer. They operate from police stations.

Unlike other teams in which the player is required to have less than 100 Bounty, the player needs to have less than 50 Bounty in order to join the Police team. To ease this restriction and improve police responses, police are immune to all traffic fines except toll booth evasion; using lights or sirens in an emergency vehicle will negate all fines.

The Police team is free for all players. Additional vehicles and equipment require the SWAT Gamepass, which costs R$299.

History[]

Police vehicles have been around since the beginning of the Ultimate Driving Universe. The first unit, an Avanta police cruiser, can be found in UD I-IV, with a livery similar to the current one. In Ultimate Driving II and III, the police cruiser was complemented by an unmarked FBI SUV.

When the revamped Ultimate Driving II came out, similar police cars were used in-game. However, there were only four vehicles: a marked cruiser, an unmarked cruiser, a marked SUV and an unmarked FBI SUV (the latter two became the police and unmarked Tahoe, respectively). That was tolerable for the time as the police cruisers could pursue any vehicle. Marked vehicles carried a light bar and a navy blue livery while unmarked vehicles had hidden lights.

When sports cars came out in 2015, the police cars could pursue them until the introduction of the Lamborghini Diablo. When that came out, police cars could not pursue the Diablo. As a result, the Police Camaro joined the fleet to help officers pursue the fastest cars in-game. As more sports cars, some even faster were released, the Police Camaro's top speed was boosted to allow it to pursue faster supercars.

In 2016, the police force's livery was changed to the more traditional white and black, which would be standardized on all marked models. More vehicles also joined the fleet, such as a marked police van and a F-150. However, the fastest cars couldn't be caught by the Police Camaro by late 2017. Players needed an even faster police car to take on these vehicles.

With the mesh update on January 4, 2018, the entire police fleet received new meshed bodies. The police van was converted to an unmarked model. The Dodge Charger was also added to help officers pursue faster vehicles without a minimum number of miles driven, allowing them to pursue sports cars.

In addition to the the mesh update, the public Police Corvette was added, with players needing at least 2000 miles (3200 km) of driving to use it. As of the racing update, it now requires players to have an XP rank of 40 to operate this vehicle. A McLaren Senna (rank 100) was also added to the fleet so the police force could tackle any vehicle with a top speed of up to 211 mph (340 km/h). For players that need a fast police car but didn't have the XP to unlock a high-speed pursuit vehicle, an unmarked Honda Civic Type R is also in the fleet as of October 2018, with a top speed of 177 mph (283 km/h).

The police fleet today is a far cry from the brick fleet it replaced, able to take on most vehicles in the game.

On July 24, 2021, the Police team, along with the EMT/Fire Team, was made free for all players. The Police Pass was renamed to the SWAT Pass; it will be fully revamped with advanced police equipment in the Police Phase 3 update series. Along with the update, the Worldwide Badger, a police tactical truck, was added for SWAT Pass owners. Players who owned the Police Pass before the change still have full access to the Police team, and will have access to all future SWAT Pass additions. It can be hard to arrest criminals as they will attempt to escape from you, especially if you are in slower police vehicles.

Tools[]

Handcuffs[]

The handcuffs arrest any player with over 200 Bounty. To arrest the player, the officer has to come up to the player and hold the interact button to put them in jail. The affected player will then respawn in a jail cell in the prison. The affected player has a 1-6 minute sentence, depending on their previous Bounty (a higher Bounty results in longer imprisonment). Arresting a player will give the arresting officer 750 XP.

Pistol[]

The pistol damages players who have over 1,000 Bounty, or players who have a gun in their hand. Unlike other teams, if an officer deals damage with their pistol, they will not receive Bounty. The pistol can also shoot tires to "deflate" them, but can only deflate the car tires that of a person who has over 200 Bounty or is armed. Upon killing a red criminal with the pistol, or shooting the head or torso of a red player who reset, that player will be imprisoned; in this function, it is like the handcuffs, albeit ranged and without an XP bonus. The pistol is statistically identical to the Rifle, albeit slightly less accurate. The pistol has a 10 round magazine.

Radar Gun[]

The radar gun calculates a vehicle's speed for traffic enforcement purposes. This is done when the player equips the radar gun and hovers their mouse over a vehicle within a set range. The radar gun can also track vehicles by clicking on them. Clicking on the sky will untrack vehicles.

Flare[]

The flare places flares on the road to notify motorists of a closed area or road, similar to EMTs. They are not physical due to potential issues, so pursuits cannot be directly stopped by them; they are simply to be used as warning lights, but nothing else.

Key Card[]

The key card gives police all access to all doors and cells in the police/prison complex, even if the keycard isn't equipped. If a police officer is killed or resets, they will rarely drop the key card, but any player that isn't a police officer with a key card will gain about 200 Bounty.

Laptop[]

The laptop can be used for viewing traffic cameras, just like highway workers and EMTs. The cameras are useful for working out locations where criminals have fled, or just for remotely monitoring traffic in specific locations.

Clipboard[]

The clipboard allows police to fine players with 20+ Bounty (yellow). This is a payable fine that is basically a portable "pay Bounty" button. If the targeted player refuses or does not pay the Bounty within 25 seconds, they automatically gain orange Bounty and can be arrested.

Gas Can[]

Like the Citizens team, a gas can can be used to refuel the player's vehicle, should it run out of fuel. The gas can can be only used once.

Police Rules[]

Ultimate Driving has a series of guidelines that are meant to improve police gameplay and make the experience enjoyable for all.

  • In Ultimate Driving, roleplay is an option. It has not been the focus of the UD series for almost half of a decade. If a player does not want to roleplay, police cannot force them to. Dedicated community-run Ultimate Driving roleplay groups and servers exist for these purposes.
  • Police are not allowed to "spawn arrest" (arresting a player once they have loaded into the game), nor are they allowed to camp spawns. This is a bannable offense.
  • Police are not allowed to block entire roads, lots, or spawns, especially for no reason. This is a bannable offense.
  • Police should not harass or repeatedly attempt to "stop" players who, roleplay or not, have done nothing wrong, such as players with green Bounty. While this is not punishable on its own, excessive attempts to stop a player can be considered harassment.
  • Sirens, radio communications, and PA system audios are allowed to be used on police vehicles via the Radio. However, per usual, it is advised that said audios are not extremely loud. This is a bannable offense. Players who use Radio sirens should also be aware that some players may have their radios muted and will not hear them. This also applies to the EMT/Fire Team.

Trivia[]

  • The SWAT Gamepass is the most expensive gamepass in the series, at R$299. For comparison, the Gun Gamepass costs R$99.
  • The Police team in most games is strongly implied to be a state police force, despite their official name ("Ultimate Driving Police Department") typically being used for municipal or regional police and not state police. Their large jurisdiction aside, the sign at the entrance of the police station designates each station as a "Troop", a designation for jurisdictional divisions typically used by state police.
  • Police cannot use civilian vehicles. They are the only team that has this restriction. This is likely to make police more identifiable and to prevent players from using excessively-fast vehicles Police cannot normally access.
  • In older games, there was a sign outside the police building containing rules. It was later removed in more recent games, presumably to distance itself from the roleplay aspect of the game.
  • With the mesh update, the radar gun only works when the player hovers their mouse over a vehicle's wheels. This is due to the vehicle bodies not actually being solid; therefore, they are not detected by the radar gun.
  • Before the Racing Update, the Dodge Charger SRT-8 and Chevrolet Camaro SS police vehicles had slower top speeds than their civilian counterparts.
  • The DGB Marino (Police), a limited police vehicle that was only briefly available with the Kohlenstoff Pearl Off-Road, is currently the only police vehicle that is not actually registered as an emergency vehicle. It does not have any functioning lights or sirens, and it is the only police vehicle that can still receive traffic fines. This is because the vehicle is actually unfinished.
  • Before the 2018 mesh update, staff members had an exclusive police vehicle nicknamed the "Staffvette", which could reach speeds of 390 MPH (624 KM/H). This made it the fastest vehicle in-game and was used by staff to catch exploiters and to denote their presence.
  • After the release of the Racing Update, the Tyler S.W.A.T. Van was accessible to normal players. The S.W.A.T. Van is a staff vehicle and cannot be used by players. This was eventually fixed.
  • Marked cruisers in UD: Noyan have a unique livery, based on the older Sûreté du Québec livery. Similarly, marked cruisers in UD: Currituck used to have a unique livery, based on the Currituck County Sheriff's Office, but they were removed in 2017.
