The UD Timeline is designed to chronicle the history of Ultimate Driving, which has existed for 13 years as of April 2023. With most players joining in the current series (and more with the release of new features in the games), it is designed to help us here at the unofficial UD Fan Wiki chronicle classic games, the legacy series along with maps past and present.

History of Ultimate Driving[]

Early days (2010-2014)[]

Ultimate Driving was just about driving and jobs related to it, where one could simply buy a car and visit the maps that were open. It was also a more realistic time, with most vehicles not able to travel at ludicrously high speeds and most vehicles were common, everyday models you would see on the streets like in real life. The original game let you either spawn a basic sports car, pickup truck, van, box truck or school bus, with a semi truck and emergency vehicles being available through gamepasses.

The first Ultimate Driving installment came out in March-April 2010 according to TwentyTwoPilots, not much is known about Ultimate Driving in the earliest days besides the fact its first wave of popularity was in summer 2010, when the game was known as Ultimate Driving: City and was created by TTP (then known, and will henceforth in this section, be referred to as Alex4897). This game was renamed to Ultimate Driving I in June 2011 when UD2, UD3, and UD4 came out and has since been renamed to Ultimate Driving I Classic as of February 27, 2014, although it has the same single block buildings and the ramps were very primitive (examples of which can be seen with this model, and with this model, which was actually made for Marcus_dot).

Ultimate Driving II was originally conceived and was developed by Coldplay765 (Evidenced here and here) however it was transferred to Alex4897, where it was built some more and then eventually released as a free model. At some point in 2012, UD I was revamped, however Alex went back on this and reverted to the old map. Ultimate Driving was also set to expand to the UK at one point, although this never made it to development and was only kept in theory.

The beginning of a new era[]

In early 2014, an overhaul for Ultimate Driving II would be in development, it would still retain it's locations like Westdale and Red Mill Crossroads, but Bloxboro was changed to Bordenville, that game would be scrapped and be replaced but you can play that old version here. Around this same time, an overhaul for Ultimate Driving IV would be in development, with new locations this time like Cape Ann. This would be developed from March 2014 all the way to November 2015. Progress was halted but it would later restart development in May 2017 in which it would undergo a second revamp to it's map. That old Cape Ann can be played here. Eventually in 2014 all of the current maps at the time would receive massive overhauls to their maps. New UI and systems were made and many of the maps made during this time period would be the roots for maps we know today. Delancy Gorge was first made, Newark was overhauled, Westover was in development, Harriston and Cape Ann were first made. However, all of this progress would be overhauled once again in 2015 when Westdale was turned into Odessa, Westover was officially released, Newark was officially released, Delancy Gorge was released for beta, Harriston and Cape Ann were in development and 2014 was also the year UD games by other developers would be made. Many things in UDU right now such as maps and UI can be traced back to this era of Ultimate Driving.

Development of more games[]

Back in 2015, TwentyTwoPilots created a new game setting Ultimate Driving II on islands, where you could drive with your vehicles. It would be the start of UD: Westover Islands, which would become the flagship map of the UDU. The game was known as UD: II back in early 2015, and was renamed to UD: Westover as of 5/14/2015. As the years passed, he needed more help on his games, so he hired developers. The next game to be released was UD: Odessa on 7/17/2015, and the first version of UD: Newark was released on 12/25/2015 (closed as of 4/24/2018). A little over a year later, UD: Delancy Gorge was released on 12/16/2016. UD: Newark was left behind in June 2017 and for some reason updated on 10/15/2017. UD: Westover received terrain update as of 10/17/2020. UD: Odessa was left behind as of 2015, and it received a huge revamp on 7/1/2016, which did a huge map change, UD: Westover got revamped on September 3, 2015, the only change is the de-urbanization of South Beach.

In addition, games in other locations outside Delaware opened throughout 2016 and 2017, such as Council Bluffs, Pleasant Valley, Noyan and Currituck. These games were made by their respective developers and brought promising aspirations to expand the game network across the region. There were also games in development in the southern US, even as far back as 2014, such as UD: Hillsborough. Many other plans for new maps, including those in Virginia, the northeast and other parts of Canada were planned but never came to full release.

More Features[]

Ultimate Driving would see huge updates in 2018, where all the vehicles would be completely overhauled with smooth mesh models rather than block ones. The Westover Islands and Odessa maps would also be expanded, and Racing would be introduced. However, with the racing update, UD was more characterized by expensive sports cars. The thumbnails also showed the change- prior to 2018, most vehicles on game icons were lower end models while today, most icons show a high end sports car. The basis of the game also changed to racing instead of traditional driving, where it is often harder to drive normally without getting caught up in a street race.

In November 2018, UD: Monroe would be released as well. In 2019, The Police Team was overhauled, and many, many new vehicles were added. In 2020, the most important change was the addition of Victory Road- which further emphasized the use of sports cars in game and allowed for legal racing. This change made street racing, which was once "legal" prior to Victory Road, illegal, as in real life. XP and rank unlocked vehicles have also been a staple since the Racing Update, encouraging people to drive to gain XP, vehicles and customization abilities.

In addition, in the 2020s, the XP system was overhauled with some vehicles and missions only unlocked by skill points on the Trucker and Transit teams. Although it can take a long time to grind through the skill points, it encourages people to stay in the game, although you can bypass this if you have the Robux to do so.

Version 5 of Ultimate Driving came out in May 2022 and implemented a hub system where you can travel to multiple Ultimate Driving games in one game slot. The UD: Odessa Overhaul and UD: Delancydrome Speed Complex were released alongside this update.

Network Decrease[]

Starting in 2018, with the resignation of developers over poor treatment by other staff, the amount of games available for players has decreased, although some are still playable (see the next section for details).

Moreover, the controversy over Gamefam in 2022 led to the network shrinking to just four official playable games, being the main releases by TwentyTwoPilots.

Gamefam[]

Throughout 2020-2023, Gamefam had control over Ultimate driving. In early 2020, Gamefam and TTP had released victory island. In December of 2022, an update was rolled out to UD: Westover to completely revise it's city to be bigger, and more "Newarky". As of November, 2023, Gamefam has pulled out from Ultimate driving. 2020-2023 In Ultimate Driving is commonly referred to be the "Dark Age" of UD in the community.

Former Developers[]

The U.D.U (Ultimate Driving Universe) was larger than it is today (and was planned to be across at least 50 games). The reason why it did is because there were more developers. It stretched further to the north, west and south than it does today; with entire sections being removed due to developers resigning or retiring. Initially, plans were to have the network span across a fictional rendition of the eastern United States and parts of the Midwest, alongside two Canadian provinces.

Under UD rules and United States trademark/copyright laws, retired developers have to take down their games as they are no longer affiliated with Ultimate Driving; however, they can be re-released as non-affiliated maps or rehosted. Many former games, mainly the ones that are in Canada, fully released North Carolina games and Pleasant Valley rehosts are still playable without the UD equipment as a result.

Today, the official playable area only includes most of the state of Delaware and a small portion of New York, only a fraction of what was available at the peak of UDU in 2018.

More details about the other Retired U.D.U. developers are found in their articles and in the category of Ultimate Driving Universe Developers.

xxdebilexx[]

Main Article: Xxdebilexx

Xxdebilexx was a former developer that was to make upstate New York and a few Canadian provinces. While he did have a successful release (UD: Noyan), he resigned in November 2018. This led to the entire universe being completely within the United States and the removal of the only international border crossing in the UDU.

Most of xxdebilexx's former UDU maps are playable as unofficial single player maps, without the UD equipment and only have a Nissan Leaf for players to explore in. The move was to make the maps playable again but not to infringe on copyright laws.

BullRusterXxl15[]

Main Article: BullRusterXxl15

He is famous for making Pleasant Valley for the Ultimate Driving Universe. He created games in Iowa, South Dakota and Texas. On July 14, 2018, he announced that he officially retired from the UDU (Ultimate Driving Universe). The reason why was because of his not very good treatment he received in the UD Community. Following his retirement, the entire playable area was now east of the Great Lakes, except when Pleasant Valley was rehosted until it was out of date.

Although Bull did not have any released games in South Dakota and Texas while in Ultimate Driving, he will be remembered for bringing the Midwest's only UDU full release. Bull now works with Hydrolock's Infiniroads projects although he has no known maps under this title. He later reopened Pleasant Valley in 2020 with a mix of vehicles available at the former citizen spawns and in the state park, likely to avoid copyright infringement. Like other developers' rehosted games, the UD equipment has also been removed.

Hydrolock[]

Main Article: Hydrolock

He is famous for making the Florida and Alabama part of the Ultimate Driving Universe, creating Sunshine City, which was later renamed Hillsborough. Like other developers, he resigned because the community was getting worse. Consequently, this moved the southernmost point of the playable area to North Carolina. He also made Infiniroads after he resigned, starting with his original Tampa/Hillsborough map, not affiliated with UD in any way.

Mochapathy[]

Main Article: Mochapathy

Mochapathy was originally making games in Virginia although he never had a full release. He resigned sometime between late 2018 and mid-2019 and did it more discretely. People speculated that he had retired due to bad internet, and had moved on from Roblox altogether.

Repujaketion[]

Main Article: Repujaketion

Repujaketion (previously JakeFromRoblox) is currently a director for the Ultimate Driving Universe. When he was a developer, he was making the New England area and UD: New Charlestown (which is based on Boston, Massachusetts).

IllinoisRoadgeek[]

Main Article: IllinoisRoadGeek

IllinoisRoadgeek (formerly Yignificentx) was the other Midwest developer, who was making Illinois and Indiana maps which only got to the development and beta stage. He has planned to join Infiniroads after he renamed UD: Arlington as IR: Northern Illinois, although he is not associated with that group at the time of editing.

Index15[]

Main Article: Index15

index15 made the games Currituck, Monroe and Fontana Dam, Monroe being the 2nd largest city in all of the current UDU, behind the Pre-Overhaul Newark (and Harriston), as TwentyTwoPilots says that he will decrease Newark's size to make it the 2nd largest city, while making Monroe the largest city (for now). He was working on a revamp for UD: Currituck, which featured a larger map with improved scenery, new towns and renumbered routes. He was also working on a revamp for UD: Fontana Dam, which would have featured a map expansion, overhauled foliage and graphics, and smooth terrain, and a revamp for UD: Monroe. He also used to work on UD: Kent Island.

index15's games are still playable although they are no longer official maps and thus, will not receive updates related to the games owned by TwentyTwoPilots. The games' thumbnails were also changed to represent key landmarks of the maps instead of using vehicles; in addition, they are standalone maps and not accessible through the Hub.

Following Bull's departure and due to popular demand, index15 also rehosted UD: Pleasant Valley.

Active Developers[]

This list includes the developers that still remain in the U.D.U community, still making games or just not retired from the UDU.

TwentyTwoPilots[]

TTP Profile Page Proving UD V existed at some point in time

Most UDU players would know TwentyTwoPilots, who owns Ultimate Driving and also runs most of the well-known titles (UD: Westover Islands; UD: Odessa; UD: Newark; UD: Delancy Gorge). He is also responsible for the majority of the Universe's successes, including getting the popularity to where it is today. Most of the vehicles are made by him (through Hum3D), as well as most of the GUIs and mini maps.

Currently, TTP is working on completing the UD: Newark revamp and getting it up to 2022-2023 standards, as it closed in April 2018.

TTP has made games you might not know about like Ultimate Driving V and other games you can check out in the screenshot on the right. Some of them are no longer playable.

MarcusDOT[]

Main Article: Marcus_DOT

MarcusDOT has resumed development on UD: Jonesboro. He had originally planned to make Savannah and Atlanta, which were shelved. He is one of the least known developers in the UDU at this time.

UD "Classics"[]

The Classic Games are the games that are from the legacy series or non released games that allow you to experience what some of the maps could have looked like.

This is the original Ultimate Driving map which was made in 2011.

The game is was likely based off of New York.

This map used very basic models. Roads had no painted lines and buildings were made out of blocks.

The only two buildings that are not bricks are an apartment building and a gas station.
This might be the first "real" Ultimate Driving game, based in Ocean City, MD.

The game also has buildings made out with blocks.

These buildings were updated from the original Ultimate Driving map.

The game will most likely be used as the base for an upcoming game called Harriston.

Harriston is an upcoming game that has been delayed since 2014.
This is the first ever version of UD Classic II that TTP has kept.

This map has 2 incomplete highways, 1 spawn and some finished/unfinished local roads.

This is due to it being an older version of the game.

This game has a working car spawn which you could drive the first Sedan that was introduced in a UD game.
This is the base for the current Odessa map.

Unlike in the current map, Odessa and Bordenville were called Westdale and Bloxboro respectively.

There is no point of exploring the game because the dealerships are all broken.
This game has the original version of Newark.

It's a small city with some rural areas.
