US 40 is a US route in the Ultimate Driving Universe. It currently stretches across three maps (Newark, Odessa and Westover Islands) and is one of only 2 roads to do so. The whole route is about 25 miles (40 km) long, including the concurrency with I-76, with only the section from the Odessa map - Newark map border to Nomtauk, New York currently playable as the Newark map is temporarily closed and receiving an overhaul. It is the first highway to have a concurrency in the UDU and the only one to have one with an interstate. Most of the route is a 4-lane divided highway with a 2-lane divided section and a couple of undivided sections (including the tunnels during the concurrency of I-76).

Overview[]

UD: Newark[]

US 40 starts west of Newark and heads east, intersecting I-476 in the city. It then heads into the country.

Odessa[]

US 40 then heads past the Odessa Hospital until an intersection with US 1. US 40 then heads directly into downtown Odessa, passing by many houses before intersecting DE 72.

Westover Islands[]

US 40 crosses the Rodanthe Sound before reaching Rodanthe Island, intersecting the northern terminus of DE 12 at a unique intersection (explained below). The US 40 then crosses the Westover Island Sound on a tall bridge before crossing a draw bridge, likely built to get boats through easily. US 40 then enters Palm Shores, intersecting the northern terminus of Kensington Road DE 8 (formerly US 40 BUS and originally DE 5). US 40 then continues heading eastwards, crossing the Palm Cove before intersecting Doe Run Road as it enters Westover’s city limits and Newark County. US 40 intersects the northern terminus of Newark County Route 3, which provides access to I-76. After this, US 40 intersects with many streets in Downtown Westover, such as Westover Boulevard. US 40 then crosses the Hidden Cove before exiting Newark County. The Summit Trail, which intersects US 40 at this point, provides easy access to the summit of Mount Astley. After this, US 40 curves east and intersects DE 8 again (formerly US 40 BUS, originally DE 4) at a roundabout, before curving east and intersecting I-76. This is where the concurrency between US 40 and I-76 begins. US 40 turns east onto I-76 eastbound, and the two cross the gap between Cape Henlopen and the Angler Island Wildlife Refuge. Entering Angler Island, the two curve northwards and head across a tall bridge across the HBBT. They cross the Westover Channel and Alan Channel tunnels. The concurrency ends in the small town of Nomtauk in New York. I-76 ends at an interchange with I-80, while US-40 is meant to continue going northwards towards Hamptonport.

History[]

On August 29th, 2022, TwentyTwoPilots began improving the Westover map circulation. This resulted in changes with the DE 12/US 40 intersection. Traffic flow was increased between DE 12 and the Palm Shores side of US 40. In addition, on September 2nd, 2022, the mini-map was changed to show the improvements north of South Beach, and to show the expansion of the map.

In October 2022, the interchange where the concurrency begins was changed to promote traffic movement along US 40. In addition, the tolls on the ramps have been removed. Unlike most other highways in the UDU, the route doesn’t have a specific speed limit on most or all of its route instead varying based on whether the area is urban or rural as well as whether it is divided or not and has a mix of urban, suburban and rural areas. In certain servers, traffic light malfunctions at Doe Run Road can cause the lights on the intersection to not work and some traffic lights in Westover and Palm Shores may not work at various times due to this as well in certain servers or have a flashing red/yellow light at the intersection due to the malfunctions.

Trivia[]

  • Most of the route is a 4-lane divided highway, except for the Westover causeway and the section east of Westover. The causeway is a 2-lane divided highway while the section east of Westover is not divided.
  • The section in downtown Newark has the widest median, the median between Fourth and Fifth streets is a city parkette. Effectively, it's a split section.
  • The original US 40/I-76 interchange was a westbound connection through the mountain on the main island, with US 40 connecting to DE 4 (now DE 508). This interchange was changed to a traffic circle in the May 2016 update to UD: Westover Islands, along with the reassignment of DE 4 and to US 40 BUS. In July 2021, US 40 BUS was transferred to state level, becoming DE 8. In December 2023, the former DE 4 section was resigned again as DE 508.
  • The intersection at DE 12 was a traffic signal until an update to the causeway. The signal was removed and replaced with a smaller intersection on the bridge, with a stop sign controlling traffic on DE-12 and reduced speed to 55 mph (89 km/h) on US 40 from the previous 65 mph limit in October 2020.
  • A drawbridge exists near the Palm Shores end of the causeway to provide a heavier impact on traffic and it is protected by traffic signals and gates. When the red signal is displayed, you must stop as the bridge is being raised and it is unsafe to pass. Stop behind the gates if a yellow signal is displayed to prevent getting trapped on the bridge and do not drive around the gate to cross when it is being lowered. If your vehicle is parked on the bridge and the gates are lowered, do not attempt to access it.
  • The portion of US 40 in UD: Westover Islands is a dangerous road due to many reckless drivers and speeders primarily around Westover.
  • With the Newark overhaul, US 40 will see major changes west of Odessa, primarily in Newark.
  • This is the longest road in the UDU, but I-76 may be longer once the Newark overhaul releases.
  • The speed limit on the divided section between Odessa and Newark past US 1 is most likely 60 mph even though the maximum speed limit on divided highways in Delaware in real life is 55 mph.
